Rare Antique Circa 1896 St. Louis, MissouriVeiled Prophet (VP) Advertising Parade Mirror

FEATURES AND SPECIFICATIONS:

This Veiled Prophet advertising mirror has a wonderful, ornate, & high relief design with “VP” and the date of October 6, 1896, St. Louis, Missouri on it. It is silver plated and displays faces on the front and back of the handle along with a round beveled edge glass mirror held by openwork filigree rim with a 3” attached handle. Measuring at 6 ⅜” x 3 ⅜” x ¼”. The mirror is in Very Good condition with the mirror intact and unbroken, all tight and no cracks. It was made by the Denmark Silver Company. The Veiled Prophet Organization was a secret society of prominent St. Louis-ans and was founded in 1878 to promote the city of St. Louis and enrich the quality of life for its citizens. Its member were anonymous. They held an an VP Parade in which the VP would carry a magic mirror that would allow him to see the past, present and future. It is thought that mirrors like this were given to attendees of the annual VP ball that followed the Parade. A very cool and interesting piece of history.
