Beautifully preserved, antique ancient Orthodox smaller cross pendant made from bronze or similar copper alloy c. 17th century (according to description of similar artifacts in the available literature). The cross and its solid necklace loop/bale are well preserved and robust. It bears marks from the coppersmith hand grinding tools. The cross is lightly scratched, the image and inscriptions on the obverse are partially worn out, but well identifiable. The cross is covered with beautiful dark green patina from the past centuries.
The obverse of the cross pendant bears aByzantine-like Suppedaneum cross and several inscriptions made with Cyrillic letters. The Byzantine three-bar cross is used in the Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches. Such a cross has three horizontal crossbeams: the top one represents the \"INRI\" nameplate, and the bottom one, a footrest.The footrest crossbeam is depicted pointing up, toward Heaven, on Christ\'s right hand side where, according to the Church tradition, the Penitent thief, St. Dismas was crucified.
The top end of the vertical crossbar and side ends of the horizontal crossbars bear the Sacred name of Jesus Christ as a four letter abbreviation in Church Slavonic: \"IИ\" in the top, \"C\" in the left and \"Ъ\" in the right side ends. The abbreviation \"IИ-СЪ\" means\"IИСУСЪ\" (\"JESUS\").
The bottom broader end of the vertical crossbar bears a two-letter abbreviation in Cyrillic letters \"СЛ\", likely a part of the word \"GLORY\" in Church Slavonic. The inscription\"KING OF GLORY\" is a traditional part of Orthodox crosses and crucifixes.
