RareAntique Shagreen & Silver Cased Sewing Set

French* Circa 1890

This very rarefitted caseis made of steel that is covered with shagreen and mounted with solidsilver edges, hinge and clasp (tests 800/1000 pure).Shagreenis from the skin of a shark or ray and is usually dyed green. Thecase has the original velvetlining and contains a tiny pair of steel scissors (2 1/2\" long) and asolid silver thimble. Thecondition of the case is excellent except for a little shrinkage of theshagreen above and below the back hinge. It is all intact with noscratches, tears or scuffing and itmeasures 3 7/8\"long x 1 5/8\" wide. The push button latch works well.

The scissors havetight blades, sharp points and cut beautifully to the tips.They\'re in greatcondition with only a little discoloration and they fit thecase well. The thimble has applied stars around the band and is markedwith the French boar\'s head silver hallmark used for 800 silver made inParis. It is also in excellent condition, in round with no holes ordamage. It\'s about an American size 8 (15 mm diameter opening).
