From the sale ofthe estate ofa grandchild ofthe german ownerof a plant nursery (that had been closed since the beginning of World War I) Inventory of the Christmas shop included a number of items of new old stock. I used the age as c 1914 (beginning of the war), but I think these are more likely from closer to the turn of the century. Known as Dresden cardboard, these beautifully embossed village sets were the product of a cottage industry which flourished in Germany before the war. The pressed pieces were sent to various families who would then hand paint them,glue oneisen glass for the windows, add gilding, or whatever was required to finish the pieces. They were then packaged and returned. I have four of the sets for sale at present. Each sale is for one set.The boxes have taken considerable wear and tear over the years, but, with their lithographed tops, still have charm. The individual figures are still attached as made.Each set has the small cross pieces(the green things in pic #2) used to allow the figures to stand up. There is some age toning, but I think the patina is a plus.None of the sets are marked with a country of origin, but are of obvious german manufacture.I have never before seen Dresden cardboardvillages as new old stock and doubt if I will again. I have seen individual figures from these old villages sold as ornaments at very high prices. The detail is wonderful. You may wish to view all my current listings. This particular set hasone sheets of figures. The last two pix are to show details of several of the figures. Because I have other village sets listed that have more sheets, I think this may have been a \"starter\" set or possibly to expand a village.
