This pair of antique wool mittens were hand knitted and hooked during the mid-1800\'s... I\'m guessing. After doing some research on this type of hand-made item, they probably originated from the New England area. Women of the Northeast started to hook small clothing accessories for extra warmth during the mid-to-late 1800\'s. The body of the mittens are knitted wool, with hooked pieces of wool thru the knitted fabric. The inside body is dark red, and the main hooked color is light beige (natural wool). The wrist area is hooked with two shades of red, and the flower design is red and green. There are round red dots on the thumb and mitten tips.Considering the age, these mittens are in very nice condition. You can see in my pictures that there is some discoloration and fading, but not bad. There are no missing or worn areas. The mittens measure 10 inches by 7 inches (across the thumb). The palm area is about 4 1/2 inches wide. The thickness measures 1 inch. After trying on the mittens, they definitely would keep your hands warm. Please do a close-up view of all my pictures. Most of the pictures were taken in natural sunlight. The last 4 pictures were taken on a cloudy day. If anyone has more information on these beautiful old gloves, please feel free to contact me.
