DETAILS OF ITEM

This piece measures 11.75 inches high. Made in the Kutani region of Japan, this is a hand painted porcelain vase that was used in a large Shinto Shrine to hold Sasaki leaves. It features Moriage plum blossoms, pine needles and bamboo leaves which represent Sho Chiku Bai, the three felicitous friends of winter.

The base of the vase has a red Japanese character for the number one which may have been the designated size of this vase. There is an indentation at the top rim of the vase that is original to the piece.

The condition is very good and its age is from the 1840\'s to 1950 (late Edo era in Japan). It is quite heavy for its size suggesting that it was heavily potted prior to firing in the kiln. It weighs 2 pounds 6 ounces before packaging.
