Rare Antique Mauthe 24 hour military wall mantel pendulum time & strike Clock:
$650.00

This is a beautiful antique Friedrich Mauthe clock from the early 1900\'s. This is a time and strike wall or mantel clock with a 24 hour dial. This is a rare find for the 24 hour dial. It is mounted in a wood case and removes easily to clean with the 2 thumb screws below the dial. Glass on the front to view the pendulum as well as the sides so you can see the clock working. This clock was working for awhile and then would stop and then start again. As with any clock after shipping it will need adjusting to make it work properly. I have the key as well and all the gears seem to be moving properly. The beautiful spindles on the front of the case make the clock look very elegant. The back of the clock is marked with the stamp for 1925 with the eagle and the F M S below. Also marked 42/104 and D.R.P., N 55006 and 21735 for a serial number. The face is marked on the back with A.M. N-8/16 as well. The D.R.P. is Deutsche Reich Patent and the 55006 refers to the patent dated January 24, 1891 referring to the pendulum leader that prevents overswing.
The Mauthe clocks had a long history in Germany. In 1844 Friedrich Mauthe (1822 - 1884) and his wife Marie started the company in Schwenningen to produce watch parts. By the end of 1860 they began to produce wall clocks and movements. In 1876 the sons Christian (1845 - 1909) and Jacob (1847 - 1915) too over. In 1886 they began manufacturing their own springs and around 1990 alarm clocks, pendulum wall clocks, grandfather clocks, office clocks and buffet clocks. In 1904 the 3rd generation took over with Eugene Schreiber (1877 - 1939) (the son of Christian Mauthe) and Dr Fritz Mauthe (1875 - 1951) (son of Jacob) and Alfred (1879 - 1911) (son of Jacob). In 1915 the company added its own sawmill and milling shop. The company did close in 1976.
The marking on the back of A.M. I believe is the marking of Alfred Mauthe and the 8/16 I believe may mean made in August 1916 This is before the time of the stamp, however the face may have been produced prior to the rest. This is a very unusual clock with the 24 hour dial. Mauthe did produce wrist watches to the German Army in the mid 1930\'s, so this may have been an early wall clock for the Army or a maritime clock.
The overall measurements of the clock are 22\" high, 14\" wide and 6 1/4\" deep. There is a hanging piece on the back for mounting, but beautiful as a mantel clock as well. This is an antique and therefore there are some minor areas that may show scratches and the bottom does have a split in the wood, but does not affect the use of the clock, just adds character to the antique.
