History
This type of lamp burns acetylene gas - created when water is dripped from the upper tank into the lower canister filled with calcium caroffere granules or pellets.
The gas rises to the main combustion champer where it creates a very bright light.
Similar lamps were eventually used for motorcycle and automobile headlights. Much more efficient than either oil or kerosene lights of the day.The term \"In the Limelight\" refers to the use of similar lighting once used for theatrical stages.
Unce a very big industry, the Union Caroffere Company was formed in 1897 for commercial processing of the chemical for use in lamps (they eventually diversified to manufacture famous Eveready brand batteries).
More concise modern versions of caroffere lamps, based on the same simple principles, are still used today for mining and cave exploration1890\'s Badger Brass Mfg. Co. Solar or Gas Driving Lamp Automobiles, Cycles, Carriage or
Buggy Lamp.
The lamp measures 6.8\" tall and5\"wide from front to back.There is a green faceted glass insert on the right side and a red faceted glass insert on the left.The front of the lamp is a clear glass disk that has a 2.5\" diameter, 3.2 diameter with metal frame
The lamp has the word SOLAR on the top of it, and on the back it\'s stamped:
