A Rare Large Austrian Cold-Painted Spelter \'Bedouin Carpet Sellers with Camel\', Table Striker or Lighter, from a casting by Bergmann, created around 1920.
This particular piece is cast in cold-painted spelter, as a gentleman\'s table lighter or striker, depicting two bedouin carpet sellers displaying a persian rug, positioned by their trusted camel. It depicts two figures in exotic middle-Eastern dress, one atop his camel, holding the intricately woven carpet as it cascades down, pure Bergmann in both the stunning detail to the figures and the naturalistic sculpting of the camel, where each muscle is carefully modeled! Cast after a bronze by Franz Bergmann around 1900, this piece was created in the 1920\'s as a table striker or lighter, showing the Art Deco love of all things exotic and luxurious during the inter-war period in Europe. The decorated saddle atop the camel, holds the wand for the striker, and the lighter fuel. This is all cast as one on top of a golden grassy verge. All is in lovely original condition, with no damage to the figures, camel or ribbed polished black glass beveled base, quite remarkable for the pieces age, showing no signs of use of from striking to the figure or striking plate beneath. Both the individually cast reigns of the camel, are also free from any damage, and show the exquisite detail of the casting, paying tribute to the original Bergmann sculpture.
The whole piece stands an impressive 7.5\" tall by 7.5\" long and 3.25\" deep, and is very weighty for the size.
