RARE COIN-OP DARBY HORSE RACE TRADE SIMULATOR GAMBLING MACHINE:
$4999.00

c.1930\'s \"DARBY\" HORSE RACE MACHINE
We are offering this interesting machine for the first time, on behalf of a local estate. We do not know how to operate it or much of it\'s history, other than it was owned by a world-famous collector who had many such machines, including a \"Pacer\'s Racers\", which we have already sold. This table-top (38\" wide x 18\" deep x 12\" high) machine houses 8 horses in a glass-top cabinet. There are 8 slots, each of which accepts a nickel. It operates on 110VAC, and has a locking lid and front compartment, each with a key.
Research on the web tells us that this was made in the 1930\'s. U.S. Patent #1970069 was filed in 1931 and granted in 1934; you can review the entire 7-page application, including schematics, by entering this info in a search engine. The nameplate says that it was made by the inventor, J.W. Whitlock Co., of Rising Sun Indiana. It seems that this company has been consigned to the dustbin of history.
Apparently, when working, the eight horses take off, and the \"race\" is randomly determined by the inner mechanism, and the end results are shown on the nameplate board, giving each horse\'s final position. Although there appears to be no “payout” by the machine, the entrants probably felt free to place side bets.
We turned the machine on, and all the lights illuminated, and the starting gate retrieved the horses and returned them to their starting positions. The motors inside appear to be running. However, not being familiar with the workings of the machine, we could not determine how to activate the race. There is a push-button on one side, that seems to be interlocked with the coin slots. The cabinet is in original, nice condition, and the glass is intact and unbroken. The horses, as you can see from the pictures, seem original and nicely colored. In any event, this is outside of our realm of expertise, so we are offering this strictly AS-IS, no returns.REASONABLE OFFERS ARE ENCOURAGED AND WILL BE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED. WE MAY HAVE TO CONSULT WITH THE ESTATE ON ANY OFFERS, BUT THIS WILL BE DONE VERY QUICKLY.PACKING & SHIPPING: We know how to pack and safely ship this safely to your door, using fresh, new packing materials, not stuff salvaged from a local dumpster. We do our own packing and shipping, which means that it\'s done right!
