Presenting a handwritten hand sized Coptic Ethiopian Bible/Psalm/Prayer Book w/ great aging throughout, complete with a hand made and original leather carrying case! Written in the Ethiopic (Ge\'ez) script, a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these \"Bibles\" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of an mildly aged copy, with original vellum animal skin pages stained and aged, as shown with text and applied border icon, bound in hand sewn and attached wooden and leather boards, themselves stitched together by twine many many years ago. The rear board has loosened, although still held to the leaves. The Bible presents itself in a smaller format, measuring around 5\" x 3.75\", portable and pocket sized. The highlight is the gorgeous two piece leather carrying case, protecting the bible from the elements so the bearer had something to carry it inside. We could loosely guess the book originated sometime late c1700- 1900s, with wear to the vellum as an indicator, as well as the condition to the text- a sure indicator of over 100 years of use. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces, combined with what looks to be possibly the Book of Psalms, liturgical prayers, or the Bible. Written in red/black, as shown, the red indicating sacred words spoken by the savior, intermixed with an attractive and decorative heading/border to the first leaf of the text. There is some definitive age to the interior of this example, which is normal for these rare gems; this one undoubtedly hundreds of years old. There are roughly 76 leaves/152 or so pages in this, as shown. Obtained in an online sale direct from Ethiopia.
A true treasure, these have sold for $1,000s of dollars, and is extremely rare and unique. Best of luck!!
