Rare Early English 19th centuryMariner\'s Sextant with ebony wood frame and bronze fittings. This, alloriginal, and very nicely made instrument has a brass index arm measuring 14inches (13 7/8) with dual peep sights, three sun shades, a third mirror& second peep sight which was used for taking back sights. The shades aredesigned to be moved from the upper position to the lower position depending onwhich horizon is being used. The arc measures from 0 to plus 100 degrees

J. Foster, Liverpool is inscribed on the set plate in the curvingcross bar. A John Foster is listed in Wikipedia, as the Surveyor and Architectof The Corporation of Liverpool in the early 19th century.

CONDITION: The instrument and its hardwareareingoodvintage condition,with a nice patina. Two of three bronze legs arepresent.All the machinery is present and in working orderexceptthat the mirrors have lost some of their silvering, with the backsight mirror losing most of it. The middle shade is cracked. The scale on the Index Bar is missing a small piece (see Photo)
