RARE FRENCH MUTZIG 1866 CHASSEPOT MUTZIG BAYONET & SCABBARD - :

A scarce French M1866 Chassepot Bayonet - 1868 Mutzig Matching No\'s. This is an example of a pre-Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) French Chassepot Bayonet that was made in Mutzig, a small town in Alsace-Lorraine, in Northern France, a region that was regularly fought over between Germany and France during the last two centuries. Mutzig was known as a location for weapon manufacturing and most particularly, edged weapons. It is onlya small town and even now only has a population that doesn\'t exceed 6000 occupants. The bayonet has a ribbed, cast brass grip and the yataghan-type blade is maker marked and dated to 1868 on the spine. The hilt is numbered 45310 and this is repeated to the top of the steel scabbard that has retained its original blued/browned finish - as have the steel hilt mounts. Blade length is 22.5 inches (27.5 inches overall).
