RARELOVELY 1855 SOFT PAISLEY SHAWL FROM KASHMIR IN INDIA, HANDLOOMED

Thispaisley shawl was made around 1855 in Kashmir, India of soft silk and wool in a lovely and unique paisley pattern. The shawl isvery light and soft to the touch, made from light but substantial wool and silk.Not all shawls are equal! This shawlhas a remarkably wonderful array of jewel like colors, woven on a loom. The design of these beautiful shawls shows a mastery of pattern that is so rare to see. The repeated paisley motifs create a swirl of activity and excitement to the eyes. The colors are lovely and slightly muted on this shawl. It is a rare survivor through the centuries! This shawl is tapestry woven, unlike shawls from elsewhere, hence marking it as a product of Kashmir, India. It lies flat, is very very soft, and has no damage at all. The fringe borders are embroidered cashmere and all in good shape. Note the variety of patterns around the central circle, the smaller woven border, ending in the embroidered final exterior border. This is a jewel of a shawl.

The exquisite harmony of the design and finecolorof this shawl makes itunusually beautiful quality.The central fieldhas a pattern of linked paisleys in a circle with black ground, and in the interstices are floral patterns: so lovely! The lovely large paisley curlicue motifs prevail in the corners of the shawl. The border pattern is a meander of ogival, architectural patternsalternating with smaller paisley motifs. The end border design is of color blocks like niches with lovely floral and paisley designs. Lovely lovely pattern. The colors are red, green, white,cream, blue, gold, black. It measure 72 x 69 inches.

Itis very cleanand has no smells and is very soft to the touch.There are nostains. The color is unfaded. The shawl isin stable, strong condition.The colors are brilliant and glorious. The design is unique and fascinating.
