Hen on nest covered dish is in great condition, but there is a black spot under glass on the base and it looks as though the color could have seeped in through an original crack line, see photo\'s for detail. There are also signs that this could have been painted at one time since there are some black dotted areas around the rim. The top appears to be the 5\" Westmoreland Glass hen with blue cased head with white milk glass body and the base has rushes on the side with a scallop or lace edge. The base has a slightly different tint but both pieces fit together perfectly. According to the Glass Hen On Nest Covered Dishes Identification & Value Guide by Shirley Smith, there is no confirmation that this is Westmoreland Glass but were sold around 1904:\" A Butler Bros. catalog reprint of 1904 features a typical Westmoreland 5\" hen top on a rush base [FRI, KO3, p.123]. Although the ad does not indicate that this is Westmoreland, it is inferred to be Westmoreland from inclusion in 1904 Butler Brothers ad (see below). Butler Brothers supposedly bought their assortments, packed, straight from the factory. So all items appearing in an assortment is inferred to be from the same factory. Whether or not it is Westmoreland will probably never be resolved.\"The book also indicates that the Hen On Rush base is rare. This Hen On Rushes dish was purchased from an estate, where I found the taped note inside indicating the dish is 80 years old. Who knows how old the note is? The tape is brittle and old so it would make sense to say the dish is well over 100 years old by now.
