Rare Hunting sawback sword c 1730.

This very sword features in Harvey J.S. Withers book “WorldSwords”.

Back then in early 2006 Harveyestimated it to be worth $595.00USD.

The most aggressive but beautiful hunting sword there iswithout a doubt.

In its day it would have been made for a wealthy European Earlor Marquis.

An ornate thick brass clam shell guard with traces ofgilding sculptured with horseman & dogs hunting a Deer, surrounded by foliage& trees.

The “D” guard mouldedwith the figure of a woman.

The pommel with dogs hunting pigs & deer.

The quillion in the form of a dogs head.

The edge of the sword is sharpened its full length with thepoint back sharpened for 3”.

The back of the blade with an aggressive cross saw toothpattern for cutting wood & bone.

The handle in stag horn.

The sword is still tight & solid with no damage.

The blade has surface pitting, but not deep & ifanything adds to its attractiveness.

No markings.

Overall length = 23.6” (600mm)

Blade length = 18” (460mm)

Blade width at riccaso = 1.62”, (43mm)

Blade thickness .157” (4mm)

Saw tooth on back edge for 12.5”, (317mm) of the blades length.

A very Rare, heavy & robust hunting tool of the 18thcentury gentry.

Certainly a luxury item of its day.
