I am downsizing and selling much of my newspaper collection. I have collected books, magazines, and newspapers for as long as I can remember. I\'ve kept everything in boxes in closets in a non-smoking home for years now, so they have been well cared for since purchase.
As one who has always enjoyed going to estate sales, long before and the internet, I have literally LOADS of things to dispose of...and though I haven\'t had free time to really enjoy these items, writing up these sale descriptions has been fun because I\'ve finally had an excuse to read through these fascinating papers.
They came from either estate sales or local sales...I don\'t remember which after all this time...but if it was old and nobody else wanted it...I did my part to save what I could. Hopefully now these papers will end up in the hands of people who will conserve and treasure them. I find it very sad to think that some of this information might not be available anywhere else, so here\'s hoping someone else has the time to scan things to preserve for years to come. This sale is for one issueof what seems to be a very rare newspaper:
THE CONGREGATIONALIST
(and Boston Recorder)
By W.L. Greene & Co.
Boston, Thursday, May 26, 1887 - Ten Pages (complete)Apart from the many essays on the church, Christianity, etc., there is one story on the British Columbia Indians in 1856; other stories of Indians being mistreated by the government; local news stories about politics, fire damage, the financial markets, and public notices; an essay on the reformation of prisons in the U.S.; and a note on Jefferson Davis, who \"is evidently in the process of mellowing down\" and who they fear \"has not long to live when such really sensible remarks as these, which he uttered at Meridian, Miss., May 12, escape his lips...\" (includes a short paragraph).
There are wonderful advertisements for Evening Dress and Summer Wear; Warner Bro\'s Corline Corsets; the Chicago Northwestern Railway (among others); many different ads for cures of all that ails you; furniture; ranges; clothing; crockery; foods including a tiny advert for Hires\' Root Beer (\"strengthens and purifies the blood\"!); etc.
Honestly, I\'ve spent two hours writing up this description, and could spend a few more if I don\'t stop reading. Although this is newspaper with a religious slant, there is a lot of fascinating secular news. The newspaper is very large, measuring about 17\" by 24\" when opened flat as in the second picture.
The paper is that good quality which I imagine was mixed with cotton, so is in better condition than more recent newspapers I have in my collection.
The most obvious detraction is a 3\" x 1/2\" area at the top/center of the newspaper which was chewed by some animal along the way. Although this defect is clearly evident, it does not detract in any way from the print as it only damaged the border margin (top and bottom when opened). It will be protected in an archival sleeve and shipped securely. If you should purchase more than one newspaper from me, I will combine for shipping/handling.
Please email any questions.THANKS FOR LOOKING!
