History

The House of theFaun was built in the 2nd century BC during theSamniteperiod (80BC).[2]There is evidence, most notably in the Eastern walls ofthetetrastyleatrium, that after thegreat earthquake in AD 62,the House of the Faun was rebuilt and/or repaired;[3]yet, the buildingwas only used again until AD 79, ultimately rendered unusable by theeruptionofMountVesuvius. Although the eruption was devastating, the layersofashcovering the city preserved artworks, likethemosaicsof the House of the Faun, which would have otherwise beenlikely destroyed or decayed due to the passage of time.

The House of theFaun was named for the bronze statue of the dancingfaunlocated, originally, on the lip of theimpluvium, a basin for catching rainwater;it has been moved to the center of the impluvium, as seen in the adjacentpicture.Faunsare spirits of untamed woodland, which literateandHellenizedRomans often connected toPanandGreeksatyrs, or wild followers of the Greek god of wine andagriculture,Dionysus. It is purely decorative sculpture of a high order:\"the pose is light and graceful,\"Sir KennethClarkobserved,[4]the modeling well understood, the general sense ofmovement admirably sustained,\" though he missed in its suavity thestimulus of sharper contrasts to be found in Renaissance nudes.

Archaeologistsdiscovered an inscription bearing thecognomenSaturninus, suggestingthat the dwelling was owned by the importantgens, or clan, Satria; a ringbearing the family nameCassiuswas also found, indicating thatsomeone of the Cassii family married into thegensSatria and lived in theHouse of the Faun.[5]

The House of theFaun was initially excavated in 1830 by the German archeological institute.

The House of theFaun contained theAlexander Mosaic, depicting theBattle ofIssusin 333 BC betweenAlexander the GreatandDarius IIIof Persia. This mosaic may be inspired by or copied from a Greek paintingfinished in the late fourth century BC,[1]probably by theartistPhiloxenus of Eretria.[6]Unlike most Pompeian pavements ofthe late second and early first centuries, this mosaic is made oftesserae, and not the more commonopus signinum, or other kinds of stone chips setin mortar.[7]

The Alexander Mosaicis complemented by other floor mosaics withNiloticscenes andtheatrical masks.[1]Other notable works of art from the House of Fauninclude an eroticSatyr and Nymphand the fish mosaic, a piececlosely resembling other mosaics in Pompeii.[7]

Architecture

The House of theFaun covers nearly 3000 square meters and occupies an entire city block, orinsula. The house can be divided into five major parts: the Tuscanatrium, peristyle atrium, service rooms and corridors, first,orIonic, peristyle, and second, orDoric, peristyle, and theircorresponding dependent rooms.[3]Like many ancient Roman houses, theHouse of the Faun hadtabernae, or storefront shops, and a highlysophisticated building plan, which details the many rooms. The entrance isdecorated by theLatinmessage “HAVE”, a greeting both for meetingand parting.[8]

Like other wealthyaristocrats of the Roman Republic, the owners of the House of the Fauninstalled aprivate bath system, orbalneum, in the house. Thebathing room was located in the domestic wing, which was to the right of theentrance, and along with the kitchen was heated by a large furnace.[1]Theservants’ quarters were dark and cramped, and there was not muchfurniture.[9]The house features beautiful peristyle gardens, the secondof which was created as a stage to hostrecitations, mimes, andpantomimes. Additionally, the house contained an entrance passage, anumber of bedrooms (cubicula), dining rooms (triclinia) for both the summer andwinter, a reception room (oecus), and an office (tablinum).[1]

Remains

Today visitors canstill explore the remains of the House of the Faun in modern Pompeii, along Viadi Nola. Although most of the original artworks have been relocated totheNational Archaeological Museum(Museo Archeologico Nazionale)inNaples, the most famous pieces, like the Dancing Faun and the AlexanderMosaic, have been recreated to give tourists a clearer picture of what thehouse was originally like.[10]Pietro Giovanni Guzzo, one of Pompeii’spast archaeological superintendents, explained, “I want visitors to have theimpression that they are entering the same luxurious house in which the ancientPompeian owners lived before it was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuviusin AD 79.”[10]
