RARE MODEL 1860 BAVARIAN PALLASCH HEAVY CAVALRY SWORD UNIT MARKED 1ST REITER RGT:
$701.99

Presented for thecollector of Imperial German edged weapons or the specialist concentrating on unit marked specimens is this rather scarce Bavarian Model 1860 Heavy Cavalry Sword or pallasch. I acquired this sword directly from an early collection begun in the 1950\'s. This pattern, adapted from earlier French and Prussian patterns dating back to the wars of Napoleon I, bears a few improvements of design. Most notable are the squared thumbrest on the ferrule and the leather finger loop that is bolted to the interior of the guard. This sword is strictly business and is of the general form attributable to dragoon or curassier units. Heavy, formidable, and imposing are all adjectives that come to mind when handling this sword. Overall, the sword is in solid, sound, untouched condition, but does evidence a fair amount of field/combat use. Thus, its cachet lies in the scars of battle and campaign that it carries. The hilt is of heavy, cast brass featuring a three-branch guard. The leather and wire of the grip is tight and is in exceptionally nice shape all things considered. Incredibly, the original leather finger loop is in place and is unbroken in spite of some surface crazing. The scabbard has several shallow dents throughout. Interestingly, the second scabbard ring has been professionally removed. This was likely done at an arsenal where older swords were retrofitted or altered to conform to new equipment configurations or regulations. Thus, I would conclude that this sword had an extensive service life spanning the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars in addition to being retrofitted and used during WWI. I say this because of the configuration of early 20th century scabbards were only made with one ring. Regardless, thissword is indeed a veteran. The most compelling aspect of the sword is the unit mark found stamped on both the exterior of the brass hilt where the branches join and on the interior side of the scabbard near the throat. This stamped unit mark reads \"B. 1. s. R.\" over the letter \"L.\" These letters represent\"Bayerisches 1 schwere Reiter\" and the \"L\" is the cypher for King Ludwig II of Bavaria under whose reign this sword was made. In other words, this sword was the property of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was accountable to the 1st Schweres Reiter-Regiment (Bavarian 1st Heavy Cavalry Regiment) \"Prinz Karl von Bayern.\" Formed as the Garde du Corps to the King of Bavaria in 1814, the regiment was garrisoned in Munich. It participated in the Austro-Prussian War, the Franco-Prussian War, and World War I. The regiment was disbanded in 1919. It doesn\'t get much better than that with regard to unit attribution. This sword likely saw service in each of the three aforementioned wars. The overall length of the scabbarded sword is about 43 inches. The double fullered blade is about 36 inches long and features a slight false edge for the last 6 inches toward the point. It is in its original polish with some scattered fingerprint marks and graying. Overall, it presents as bright appearance. This sword was an eyewitness to and a participant in the glorious days of old Bavaria, the zenith of the new German Empire, and the subsequent decline after Germany\'s defeat in the First World War. What stories it could tell. This would make a great addition to any collection of Imperial German edged weapons. \"! Please see my other listings for items which may interest you. Good luck!
