Offered here is a fine and rare Mughal or Safavid Rumal (Wrapper) from the size probably to wrap a Holy Koran book. 18th century - early 19th century North India or Persia. The piece is shaped like a Mihrab prayer niche on a prayer rug, and indeed this may have had the double use of touching the head while in payer. The Koran out of respect has always been carefully wrapped and put in the highest place once finished with reading. The tendrils are defined by silver wrapped threads typical of good quality work. The reverse shows a fine border of slightly later persian crimson silk with a pattern and a very colorful apple green lining.
Size: 11 x 16.5 inches
Condition: Very good for its age and that it is all silk. Material , colors, and embroidery in very good stable condition. Slight rubbing from use, small puckers with slight wear to the field of silk and upper right areas of silver metal embroidery as seen - from age. Floss nice and vibrant as is the reverse lime green silk. NO brittleness.
