The 1860 moccasins have beading on the wide instep, on the sides and the back. On the bottom soles of the moccasins, there are painted designs in yellow, white and red, some of the designs (linear and geometric) are outlines in black - these designs appear on only one sole, on the other moccasin sole, some of the painted designs have been worn off. The seed beads are in colors of navy blue with a white color background. There is a tongue or a flap and there is leather surrounding the ankles which has cotton material in a red color stitched on the leather. The material of the moccasins appears to be rawhide; there is a short leather tie at the back of the moccasins. There are some condition issues on the moccasins; some of the beading is missing (toes), there is some deterioration of the leather on the toes; some of the blue seed beads are discolored. Native American moccasins were designed for their specific Environment. Hard-sole moccasins, usually made from one or more pieces of hide, are often associated with the western plains and desert areas. The hard soled moccasins were important to protect feet from harsh cactus or prairie-grass covered ground, and sharp rocks not worn down by water.
