Kenneth Begay (1913-1977) as the American Museum of Natural History stated, \" was called the \"father of modern Navajo jewelry,\" for his clean, bold, modern designs. But he also exemplifies the long history and continuity of Navajo jewelry - making. Although deeply rooted in tradirion jewelry - making techniques, Begay\'s work was so innovative that it was rejected from a 1949 exhibition of Native art as too radical. Although he used and taught the old techniques, Begay explained near the end of his life, \"I like to create something new and still use the old Navajo design style.\"

Kenneth Begay created clean, elegant designs based of streamlined shapes that were repeated to form balance and harmonious patterns, a style that has been compared to Navajo weaving.\"

This is the artist that inspired creativity and innovation by not doing things how they were expected to be done. He made a piece of jewelry that was inspired by how he saw the world, not by something in a showcase.

Begay is one of the most famous jewelers of his generation. His designs are renown for their modern style and elegance and are owned by the major collectors of Naive American art. His work is represented in THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION, AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY AND THE SCOTTSDALE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART among many others.

These exquisite pre-owned buckle and scarf slide or man\'s ring size 9 to 9 1/2 show light wear for their age. It is rare that a Kenneth Begay piece as fine and rare as these come on the market, but is is even RARER is that they are a MATCHING PAIR ! These two HISTORICAL WORKS OF ART show the mastery of the art of silversmithing that was Kenneth Begay. The blending of two of earths wonders, beautifully grained ironwood and sterling silver make these both incredible and highly desirable works of art ! The incredible detail in the cutting of the wood and inlaying the pieces into the sterling reflect the mastery of Kenneth Begay.! The buckle and scarf slide/ ring were made for my stepfather by Mr. Begay ! The buckle will accommodate a belt 7/8\" wide. The overall size of the beautifully understated piece is 1 1/8\" x 1 3/4\" and weighs a total of 17.6 grams, Please notice the graceful and very unusual curve of the buckle, something unique to artistry of Kenneth Begay ! The slide/ ring measures 1 3/4\" long and 1 3/8 \" at the top and tapers to 7/8\" at the base. The slide was originally a bolo and my stepfather had Mr Begay make into a scarf slide for my mom, so they could wear matching Begays ! The scarf/slide could also be worn as a large man\'s ring size 9 to 9 1/2. Total weight of the slide is 20.9 grams . Total weight of these two RARE, MATCHING and MAGNIFICENT pieces of historical art is 38.5 grams !
