Throughout American Irish history, there have been several Irish fraternal societies. While the “Ancient Order Of Hibernians” is probably the largest and best known, there were others that in their day had substantial membership. The Irish \"Knights of St. Patrick\" was a very important early Irish Catholic organization. This is a landmark historic piece that dates back to the circa 1869-1870\'s. So naturally this is not a mint item. Considering its age, the sword is quite attractive and in good vintage condition with normal expected wear of the years. The scabbard which we would describle as being somewhat brass in colour has some discolouring and spots and the little throat-piece is gone (it is not important). There are a couple of small minor nicks, mostly on the backside. All age issues aside, this beautifully engraved scabbard is quite impressive and not to mention, it is also unusual. The engravings are quite artistic ( they show a natural, free folk art spirit) and the scabbard has a very nice shine to it. The blade has numerous etchings which have lightened over time. But they are still visible. The blade is of a wider type and there is some oxidation in places. The owner\'s name is there, as well as that of the group \"Knights of St. Patrick\". It is most solid and strong. Let us state that in our view, if one wants a significant Irish-American Sword of a very early period in history, one cannot hope to find a finer example then this. This classic high quality circa 1869-1870\'s sword was made by the illustrious \"Roby Mfg.Co\", a very important historic sword maker who was based in Chelmsford, Massachusetts and was quite active already during the Civil War years. The workmanship here is as excellent as the best pieces made by “The Ames Sword Company”, “M. C. Lilley & Co”, “The Pettibone Bros” and “William Horstmann of Philadelphia”. This is a superior work by one of the finest 19th century artisans. Here is your chance to add this rare Irish-American Sword to your collection.
