Rare and unusual original antique plug bayonet from the early days of colonial America. This piece dates circa 1650-1750. The cutting edge measures 15-1/4\" and overall length is an impressive 21\". The early hand forged double edged blade has a central ridge running its entire length. May possibly have been a salvaged sword blade. The point of the blade has been rounded. The iron cross guard is \"S\" shaped. The ferule is brass as well as the pommel cap which has dents. Both the guard and the ferule show slight movement. The tapered wood grip is turned. I\'m pretty sure this was done to insure a better grip when used as a knife or short sword. The smooth, tapered grip found on the majority of plug bayonets makes for a poor handle. The grip shows hard age and use and has several age cracks. These, however, do not effect its integrity and it is firm to the blade. This piece came from the Eastern MA area. This is only the second such example I\'ve seen in decades. Beware of a number of reproduction and fake plug bayonets out there. This is definitely not one of them. Guaranteed to be of the period stated. This piece would be a highlight of any early bayonet collection or would look great in an antique colonial musket.
