Rare original hand-written order placed in 1864 (Civil War era) for a Remington 16 gaugeironrifle barrel to the Joseph C. Grubb & Co. of Philadelphia. (2 pcs of historical ephemera)
Hand-written receipt of order from Grubb & Co., of Philadelphia, who were \"Importers and Dealers in Guns, Rifles, Pistols, Cutlery, Sporting Apparatus, Gun Materials and Fishing Tackle\". A Mr. W.L. Watt of St Louis, Missouri placed an order for a 36\", 16 gauge iron rifle barrel that cost $5.50, and he wished to have it shipped express C.O.D. There is a separate hand-written note from a Mr Kennedy (representing Grubb & Co) on lined tablet paper (with watermark) explaining that they required the payment before it could be shipped, because it was too costly to send it C.O.D (when the total was only $5.50).
This is a rare and extraordinary written correspondence with interesting historical significance. This tiny window into the past is in amazingly good shape, and would be a great addition to a collection of Civil War or gun ephemera---even for St Louis history buffs!!
Condition: Good condition, no holes or tears, only slightly yellowed due to age. There are some stains. There are fold marks, but those were probably made by the sender.The body of the letter reads:
\"Respected Friend,
Enclosed find invoice of goods sent by Express this day. Your order is complete with the exception of Remington Barrel which we hope will be in before long.We have not sent this bill C.O.D. as the cost for collecting on small amounts is to great. You will please remit us a draft for the amount of bill on receipt of same. Waiting further commands we are.
Yours truly, Joseph C. Grubb & Co.\"
