About HERMANHERMAN was launched November 4th, 1974, by Universal Press Syndicate, making creator Jim Unger an international sensation. Winner of two Reuben Awards for Best Newspaper Panel from the National Cartoonist Society, Unger’s unique illustrative style and brilliant wit influenced a generation of comic creators who followed. The British-born cartoonist died of heart failure at his home in 2012, yet the groundbreaking newspaper comic panel continues to be featured in hundreds of newspapers worldwide with millions of book collections sold in more than 25 countries.About the Original Comic Strip ArtworkPrior to the use of personal computers, comic artists drew each comic with a stick pen and bottle of ink. Borders were hand-measured and created with a ruler. Then stick-on Letratone was used to create dots and patterns for shading. Many versions were trashed and re-drawn before the artist was satisfied with what was created.Unger would send two to four weeks of artwork prior to deadline in order for the Syndicate to adhere its typeset copyright notices and captions from the creator\'s notes. It would be photographed and printed six-up on a page, known as “slicks”, for distribution to daily newspapers. The original artwork was then returned to Unger, and a new batch of comics would be created again.
