Overall, in GoodCondition
Adak became the headquarters of the
Navy Alaska Sea Frontier Command
in April of 1944 and the following
month, Davis Air Force Base, Adak
was renamed Naval Air Station and
Naval Operations Base, Adak
In July 1950 it was consolidated into
the Naval Station, Adak and remained
in that capacity up until 1984 when itwas
redesignated as the Naval Air Station,Adak
The population in the early 1950s wasvery small
with only 15 officers and 200 enlistedmen assigned;
by the 1960s the military and civilian populationgrew to
about 1,000; it had increased to nearly3,000 when I was there
from 1979-1984 serving as the CommandingOfficer’s Secretary;
then with permanently assigned VPsquadrons rather than short
deployments, by the 1990s Adak’spopulation had surpassed
5,000; however, in 1994 Naval AirStation was designated
as Naval Air Facility (NAF) Adak andsadly, the military
mission at Adak ended on 31 March 1997
This extremely rare patch is from the1950s and was the first
designed for the unit – later ones showsome minor changes (mainly
to the patch’s border); but over theyears, the original design and
the “Birthplace of the Winds” motto wasconsistently maintained
