Rare Civil War Quarter Plate Outdoor Tintype Image
Union Soldiers In Camp
By Capt. Abraham Cottrell,
8th Michigan Infantry
Scarce Image By Famed Soldier-Photographer!Here is a great outdoor Civil War image taken by an important photographer. What we offer here is this nice quarter plate outdoor tintype showing several Union infantrymen at camp, photographed by Capt. Abraham Cottrell of the 8th Michigan Infantry, as acquired from a collector of Cottrell images (amongst other things). Cottrell was originally from the Birmingham, England area but ended up emigrating to America, settling in Lansing, Michigan. There he opened a photography business prior to the war. He also worked as a gunsmith but photography was his first love...so when the war came and he enlisted, it followed that he would want to take images to document some of his experiences as a soldier-which he did. In August 1861 at age 35 he enlisted in the \"Elder Zouaves\" of the 8th Michigan Infantry. Due to his gallant actions assaulting a rebel battery at Port Royal, then-Lieutenant Cottrell was appointed aide-de-camp to General Stevens in January of 1862. He suffered a shoulder injury when his horse fell on him, something that would never heal properly and bothered him the rest of his life. He wanted to rejoin his company so he resigned his post as aide and was promptly in the thick of battle with the 8th Michigan. Unfortunately during the fight for Secessionville at James Island, SC, he was severely wounded in the side and back, with a round lodging near his spinal column. He was listed as killed in action but in reality had been taken prisoner, going from Charleston to Columbia and finally to Libby Prison. He survived despite the lack of proper medical care, was exchanged in October 1862...and miraculously rejoined the 8th Michigan in December. His injuries prevented him from being effective in combat so he was discharged for disability in March of 1863. In August he was appointed 1st LT. in the Invalid Corps (later renamed the Veteran Reserve Corps) where he became involved in organizing and training recruits. He stayed a member of the VRC throughout the war but was involved in a number of other assignments, including maintaining order among draftees at Carlisle Barracks, commander of recruit training at Camp Butler, IL, serving on a court martial board, and organizing 40 companies of recruits for PA regiments at Camp Curtin. Cottrell certainly had a strong work ethic to be sure. He eventually made his way back to Lansing after the war, resuming his commercial photography business, but the effects of his injuries and imprisonment were catching up to him... plus the loss of his wife in 1872 left him a single father to two daughters. In true fashion, he soldiered on, staying active in the GAR nearly up to the time of his passing in 1901.

Cottrell may have had little time for his commercial photography business, but fortunately for photographic historians, he did capture many images of soldier life on a personal level during his service, including the one we offer here. This quarter plate tintype image is in the horizontal format and shows a row of soldiers in front, with random soldiers in the background and rows of wedge tents behind. This is obviously an encampment; it is not identified as to location but we think these may be some of his comrades of the 8th Michigan. (It is also possible that this may be a later wartime image taken at Camp Butler. You historians may be able to research this properly.) The image is well composed with good depth of field. It shows some crazing/crackling but is very legible with good contrast. See pics. It is housed in a full quarter plate leather/wood case. The case shows only some minor external wear (see pics) and retains its brass latches.
