A rare pair of Mid-19th Century turners’ armchairs of American origin.

This pair were purchased in the1960’s from a New England dealer andimported to the UK where they have remained in the same collection until now. Believed to have originally been made for a female over aperiod of approximately 5 years as she grew from an adolescent to an older woman hence the difference in size between the two.

The design is also known as the \"Brewster Chair\" andwasnamed afterWillam Brewster, one of thePilgrimfatherswho landed inPlymouth, Massachusettsin 1620. In 1830 the Brewsterfamily of Duxbury donated Elder Brewster\'s original chair toPilgrim HallMuseumin Plymouth, USA, where it remains today. His chair was created inNew England between 1630 and 1660. Other similar New England chairs from the17th century and later have been named after this piece.

Our stunning examples have the name and date inscribed to each crestingrail \"Anna Flechmann 1843\", with coronet above and flanked bypolychromed flowers and foliage.

Constructed from ash with cedar/pine seat boards.

With substantial traces of their original paint too.

Large chair - back height 41\" / Max seat width 22 1/2\"reducing to 17 1/2\" / seat height 19\" / seat depth 16 3/4\"

Smaller chair - back height 37 3/4\" / max seat width 22 1/2\"reducing to 17 1/2\" /seat height 16 3/4\" / seat depth 151/4\"

Condition - joints sound. Left arm of larger chair replacedhistorically with oak. Each seat has a small fillet of timber to the centre(see images) where the original planks have shrunk across the grain.Hessian strips have been placed to the underside of each seatboard to addstrength.
