Rare Pair of Antique Mettlach German Vases #11 Earlyware -Not in Mettlach Book :
$349.99

This is a rare pair of Gothic Revival Style Antique Mettlach German \"earlyware\" vases mold #11 made by Villeroy and Boch which are not listed or depicted in The Mettlach Book. The vases are six-sided with flaring handles on each side and feature opposing figural relief figures of a man holding a large pitcher or ewerwatering the earth and a woman with a basket on her head, possibly representing planting and harvesting. The other panels around the body and the neck have a fragile andintricatelydetailed relief which gives these vases a Gothic Revival appearance. There is liberal use of platinum around the base and on portions of the relief and handles, giving a striped effect to the handles.
The vases measure 12 1/4\" tall and measure 6\" wide at the widest point across the body. The old Villeroy and Boch mark (VB) appears on the bottom clearly with the number 11,sometimes called a bubblegum stamp. The platinum has wear as would be expected from age and use. Other than the silver wear, one vase appears to be in mint condition. The other vase has a tiny chip on the base (see 7th photo) and a small piece of pottery relief missing from one section (see 8th photo).
If you are a Mettlach collector, these are truly beautiful pieces, and very special to have not been listed orshown inThe Mettlach Book, which is afairly comprehensive guide of all things Mettlach. Earlyware pieces were typically made between 1840-1870.
