The delightful raised pattern of a snowshoe is revealed as the ice cream melts as if resting in snow. The underside rim features a polychrome version of the seal of the President of the United States, in which an eagle with outstretched wings holds arrows and an olive branch.The plate is of the President Hayes china pattern. An inscription mark appears in red above designer Theodore R. Davis’s signature in black states that the piece was made by Haviland & Co. of Limoges, France. It is also stamped with “H&Co.” in green.The ice cream plate is from the collection of the venerable White House Aide, Colonel William H. Crook (1839-1915), who was a noted collector of Presidential and White House memorabilia. His service at the White House began when President Lincoln summoned him from active duty in the army to serve as his personal bodyguard. Colonel Crook was not working the evening of Lincoln’s assassination and noted in his book, “Memories of the White House”, that it was the first and only time Lincoln neglected to say goodnight, but instead said “Good-bye Crook.”The White House memories Col. Crook saved, salvaged and recorded underscore his admiration for the man he served. He knew his place in history was significant and the archive he amassed is a national treasure.Condition is perfect
