$683.84
This is a fabulous German Renaissance silver cameo ring, dating to the 16th century. The cameo is cut on multicolored Cowrie shell (Cypraea), fashionable for its riot of achievable colours. This cameo is a great piece of art, with pale blue/white background, with a portrait of a helmeted warrior in brown and pink layers. the style of helmet (a Burgonet) being in use in Europe around the mid to late 16th century. The warrior is likely to be a portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in the guise of Mars. Cameo rings in shell became sought after by noblemen for jewellery and cabinets of curiosities during the 16th century. This is an early example with plenty age related wear and patina. A nice and highly collectable gem of historic significance.
