Here is a wonderful pair of solid silver sugar tongs which were produced during the reign of King George III, by the famous and renowned Bateman dynasty.They are elegant with bright cut decoration of floral swirls throughout. The initial \'S\' is monogrammed on the bow, probably the initial of the original owner. The tongs are delightful and made from a decent gauge of silver.
Condition is superb. There are no splits, dents or repairs, just the usual surface scratches commensurate with silver which has survived for some 214 years. The acorn shaped bowls have no issues and remain functional.They have retained their shape and the engraving is as fresh as the day that it was produced. These are highly collectible and would compliment any collection of Bateman pieces. My photographs confirm condition, however further images are available if required.
The hallmarks are crisp, showing London 1803, the makers being Peter, Ann and William Bateman. The business had its origins in 1761 when Hester Bateman founded her small silversmith operation. The business evolved through the family and was highly successful as producers of flatware, creamers, salvers,teapots and wine labels, from premises in Bunhill Row, London. This threesome partnership came together in 1800 and traded through to 1805, following Ann\'s retirement. This is a fabulous example of Bateman silver which is highly soughtafter and collected globally.
The sugar tongs are 12cm long and weigh 20g.
