Once,in Sedona, I had the chance to have an extended conversation with a famous HopiKachina carver. It was just a friendlyconversation and we started talking about the Hopi way and some of theirhistory. I had always wondered why someof the jewelry made showed parrots; they\'re not native to the area.Hetold me that in days past the area lived in by the Pueblo People was a lotwarmer and the Pueblo People were part of an extended trade network that ranfurther north and ran south well into the area that now is Mexico. In those days many of the Pueblo People wouldkeep parrots traded from the south and having a parrot was a status symbol justlike an expensive car might be today.Sofor those of you that do not yet own a Boxster S in Race Yellow here\'s amagnificent parrot buckle made by noted Hopi silversmith Bueford Dawahoya.

Bueford is thebrother of Bernard Dawahoya and Bueford began making jewelry in the early1960s. He has works in many collectionsand museums including The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.Bueford died in 1998.

Marks: The back of the buckle is marked “sterling” and has both Bueford’s cloud hallmark and a\"copyright\" symbol.

Condition: This buckle is in excellent condition. It’s from my personal collection of NativeAmerican items.
