Rare Suite 4 KING\'S SHILLING TANKARDS 1933 top quality SILVER PINT MUGS & coins:
$1587.50

We are offering for sale an excellent suiteof four silver tankards with glass bases.

The legend is that the glass bottomed tankard was developed as a way of refusing the King’s Shilling i.e. conscription into the British army or navy during the 17th-19th centuries. Press gangs would surreptitiously drop a shilling in to a drink and if somebody was found with the shilling in his possession, they would be deemed to have volunteered. With a glass bottomed tankard, the drinker could see the coin in the bottom of the glass and refuse the drink, thereby avoiding conscription.

Siungle glass bottomed mugs are tricky to find, so a suite of 4 to match isa realrarity. These straight sidedbeer mugs have been made from a good thickness of silver and have a nice sturdy feel in the hand. They are all in excellent polished condition with no engravings.

We have also included in the offer a silver shilling from each of the last four monarchs depicted on silver coinage:

Queen Victoria (1893), King Edward VII (1908), King George V (1934) and King George VI (1941). These could add to the enjoyment of handing out ale or giving as a gift.

Please view our specialist site for a further large selection of fine quality Victorian, Georgian and earliersilver.
