For your consideration is a very rare and unusual Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver Sewing Basket with Spool Holders, circa 1870.

This is a very early piece and most likely a special custom order or possibly done for one of the many international exhibitions Tiffany participated in. It is properly hallmarked on the bottom side with the marks dating this piece 1870 to 1875.

The basket rests on three curved shell feet. It is beautifully decorated with pierced sides and a chased rim done in a Greek key pattern. The articulating handle is pierced also with beaded edging and a monogrammed cartouche flanked by shells.

Inside the basket are four spool posts that measure approx. 1.25” tall which will hold 4 large or 8 small spools (2 on each post). Between each spool post is a pierced crescent for cutting the thread.

This unique treasure measures approx. 6½” wide by 1¾” tall (5¼” to top of handle) and weighs approx. 335 grams.

The Basket is in excellent antique condition, free of any mentionable issues other than light age/use related wear and tarnishing along with some signs of polishing residue; could use polishing.
