Rare Terracotta Clay Buddhist Disciple \'Phra Sangkajai\', 19th Century Thailand.

Overview:x Phra Sangkajai, a fat body monk, has traces of hair on his head, looks similar to the Buddha, while Budai is clearly bald, still they were sometimes confused as the other. His figure appears throughout Thai culture and Buddhist temples as a representation of contentment, with both hands in an iconography gesture holding his pot-belly.

xxxxx He is depicted seated in the \'Virasana\' posture, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The profile is plump, wearing a long diaphanous garment in Theravadin Buddhist fashion, with the robe folded across the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and breast partially uncovered. The end fold of the robe draped gracefully over his shoulder, overlapped and marked with v-shaped knotch. The face is portrayed in delicate detail, with a serene expression, cheeks are plump, nose prominent, heavy arched eyebrows set above bulging eyes, and exaggerated earlobes rest on his shoulders. His head is covered in graduated sections of hair curls, whorled with oper spaces, indicating a thinning effect, both at the forehead and behind the head. xxxxx Phra Sangkajai (Sangkachai) was a Buddhist Arhat during the time of Lord Buddha. Buddha praised Phra Sangkajai for his excellence in explaining sophisticated \'Dharma\' in easily and correctly understandable manner.
