Herewe have 59 of 60 Medallions from the Franklin Mint version of TheThomason Medallic Bible.

Thisset is based on a historic set of sixty 78mm medals thatSirEdwardThomason of England created inthe early 1800\'s, based on Biblical paintings by the old masters. TheFranklinMint adapted these designs to 45mm medals, and selected new biblicalquotations for the reverse. ThisFranklin Mint version of the Sir Thomason medals was struck in 1967through 1970 in bronze and in sterling silver. The bronze seriesconsisted of 9,031 sets, and the sterling series of 2,090 sets.Thisis one of the earliest Franklin Mint issues ever produced.

The silver version has become quite rare because many silversets were melted down when silver prices twice reached 5 times the costofthe original set sold from the Mint. TheFranklinMint websitecurrently has one pre-owned set for sale, without papers, for$4022 including shipping. So, you can see that this set is an amazingoffer, offerdings starts well below the melt value.

Using a jeweler\'sscale, I weighed the medals and got a total of 1600.8 pennyweight, oralmost exactly 80 Troy Ounces (ozt). TheFranklin Mint website states the weight of each medal is 1.25 troyounce. I found that eachmedal is slightlyoverweight, averaging about 1.35 ozt rather than 1.25 ozt - 1/10th of atroy ounce more per medal - and that notwo medals have exactly the same weight. The diameters are exactly 45mm.

Ichose one medal at random and cut a deep groove in the rim to acid testit. It tested pure sterling.

Interestingly, this set iscomprised of medals from two different sets, #1686, and #1790, butthere are no duplicates. I bought these from a widow selling items fromher late husband\'s estate.

Manyof the medals are stained slightly yellowish or brownish as well ashaving some normal tarnish. I rubbed my finger on a couple ofthecoins with the yellowish stains, and someof thestainscame off, and some did not. I did not attempt to clean any more coinsor in any other way.
