This particular tie up for sale is in good original condition and quite rare! Due to it\'s rarity and collectability we restored and preserved it to the best possible result.

Backgrounder:

Lucilla Mara de Vescovi was born inRome,Italyin 1893. She marriedMalcolm Whitman, an American singles tennis champion, in 1926. In 1930, following an argument about her husband\'s dull ties, his wife made him one from silk dress material.

In 1932, Whitman committed suicide. His grief-stricken widow subsequently travelled throughout Europe, where she purchased fabrics and brought them back toNew Yorkwith the intention of launching a career making men\'s ties.

Following her return to New York, Lucilla de Vescovi Whitman founded her men\'s neckwear company in 1935. She branded herself \"Countess Mara\". While Mara was her second name, the company name might have been inspired by an 18th-centuryKnellerportrait of the Countess de Mar wearing a loosely tiedSteinkirkcravat.

Countess Mara ties featured several novel marketing decisions. She had her initials featured on the outside blade of each tie, ensuring that they were instantly recognizable. The ties were made in very limited quantities, typically only fifteen dozen per design, and they were comparatively expensive. This led to their becoming collector\'s items, sought after by celebrities and fashion-conscious businessmen.Other tie manufacturers, noticing her success, copied her business model and hired artists to imitate her tie designs.Mara did not mind this, saying in 1949 that being imitated had \"expanded the acceptablity of the pictorial tie\".

In 1944 Countess Mara was awarded theNeiman Marcus Fashion Awardin recognition of the influence her ties had had upon fashion.

One of the most high-profile wearers of Countess Mara neckwear wasFrank Sinatra, who sometimes wore one-of-a-kind custom ties made especially for him by the firm.[6]

Rest assured all of ourties have been professionally cleaned and carefully steamed with properly rolled edges. Our dry cleaner is one of the top vintage clothing/wedding gown restorers in So. Cal!! That said, it is not unusual for them to completely and carefully disassemble each tie..WOW! Prior to cleaning, original components, i.e. lining, stitching and tie material are often separated for spotting, repair, treatment and finally cleaning of each component prior to reassembly with the original stitching. The ties are then custom tailored back to original configuration with ends to best V proportion and finally a proper steam treatment carefully rolling, not pressing, the edges.

We take pride is these beautiful pieces of wearable art and want to make sure that we make every effort to properly restore, preserve and clean our ties for the BEST possible result and the new owners enjoyment. As mentioned, this tie is in very good original condition and are still very presentable! However, despite best restoration efforts, this tie are probablybest suited for a costumer, prop master or vintage display, not the purist collector! Although not very noticeable, there is some very light discoloration and yellowing to inner silk linings. This tie still has a beautiful sheen and the spine stitching as well as collar support is excellent. There is light if any evidence of either moth, knot burn or moisture stain blemishes. This tie measures roughly 47 3/4\" long and is 3 1/2 to 3 3/4\" at widest point. All ties are a traditionalRayon/Silkcommon during the 1940\'s and 1950\'s. A handsome and very unique tie.Best Regards & Happy offerding,RetroActive VintageStoresSign up for my email newslettersby adding my store to your Favorites.
