This is a RARE Solid Sterling Silver Six-Sided Marriage Box in great condition and includes the original paper. The bottom of the box reads © MMA 1985 Sterling and the sticker on the bottom reads MADE IN PORTUGAL. Measures approximately 2 1/2 inches tall and 2 1/4 inches wide at the widest point. 3rd Quarter of the 17th centuryIn Dutch Friesland during the 17th and 18th centuries it was custom for a man to present the woman of his choice with a marriage sovereign - usually offered in a small silver box. The acceptance of such a gift meant that the woman intended to marry the giver, and this was regarded as legally binding. These boxes, identified as knotjes, or brides\' boxes were sometimes filled with golden ducats. Like this six-sided example, such boxes were frequently decorated with allegorical figures depicting trust hope and prudence as well as love and tenderness. The original of this box, although incompletely marked, can be attributed to Friesland, where most of these boxes were made.The master mold for the sterling silver reproduction was made from the original box in the Museum\'s collection. Oxidation may cause the piece to darken. Polish lightly with a soft cloth and a mild silver polish. Do not use abrasive cleaners.Please feel free to message me any questions.
