Rare, Vintage Native American Indian Ketoh - Bow String - Wrist Guard - Bracelet

Navajo Tufa Cast Silver

This wonderful collector’s item features a cast, silver “Ketoh” with an intricate, balanced corn stalk design in rectangular form, measuring 3 1/2\" L x 2 3/4” W and is accented with Four natural Turquoise Stones on center. Each stone is at least 1/2\" L and is set in a unique scallop serrated bezel. The one of a kind silver ornamentation is \"pinned\" onto a supple black leather band. The band measures 3 1/2\" W by approximately 12\" in length. It fits on the wrist with two leather thong ties and is adjustable. The leather appears to be original based on the way the cast silver piece is attached. It is naturally textured and may be Buffalo hide.

“Ketoh” is the Navajo word for wrist guard. This Ketoh was originally created to protect the wrist when using a bow and arrow. They are now used as personal adornment and is considered to be highly fashionable.

\"Ketoh designs often have an emphatic center like this one, recalling the sacred place from which the first Navajo emerged from the giant reed into this world. The symmetrical four-part organization seen here is also commonly used to evoke the four cardinal directions. In the Navajo creation story, Begochiddy brought order out of chaos in the first and fourth (final) worlds by dividing them into four quadrants, marking each with a mountain. Order and harmony are further evoked in the ketoh through the careful balance of curved lines, symbolizing the female ideal of activity, and straight lines, symbolizing the male ideal of stasis.\" Borrowed from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts website.

This fantastic investment quality piece is in excellent condition with no issues or excuses.
