Hello and Thank You for stopping by! This was my uncles coin holder for many years. He never smoked but it is really an ashtray, match and cigarette holder. The Pelican is made of Bronze. The finish is original and has not been touch since he had it. The felt o the base is original. The Pelicans head hinges back to expose the items you stored away. The Hole is 2.5 inches deep and may not fittoday\'scigarettes, unless your smoke the originalnon filter type.

This Pelican is electro-formed (more commonly known as bronze-clad), a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze was made to adhere to a plaster form through the chemical process of electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900\'s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces yet still were affordable by the middle class.
One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze, their name clearly incised on the top of the base. Pompeian Bronze operated in NYC in the late 19-teens and early \'20s.
Condition is Good. No damage to the cladding, no mashed corners some light normal dented design elements. There is a little play from side to side in the hinged top, but the hinge itself is strong, works properly and is functional. Finish is original, does show some wear and flaking. The piece sits flat and solid.
9 inches tall; the base is 6 1/2 inches by 3 3/4 inches, and the tail feathers stick out another 5/8\'s of an inch over the back edge of the base. And heavy at 4 1/2 pounds.
