Rare Wiener Werkstatte Art Deco Micro Beaded 49\" Lariat Necklace-
Maria Likarz Strauss

The lariat is crocheted with white, translucent silver-gray, and bright green microbeads over supple cord and the ball ends

are made of lightweight wood or cork beads, also covered in crochet beadwork.

Length including the ball terminals is about 49”. Each ball is 11/16” in diameter.

All the beads are intact, there are no holes, frayed threads or gaps.

Due to the angles of the balls, some beads face different ways but all are present.

Condition overall is very, very fine.

There are spiral bands, angled stripes and animal patterns in the beadwork.

The intricate pattern suggests that it may have been designed by Maria Likarz Strauss,

one of the most prolific of Wiener Werkstatte pattern designers.

One of her micro-bead necklaces can be found in the NYC Metropolitan Museum (photos available online).

The Wiener Werkstatte attribution of the necklace we offer is supported by other works credited to this Austrian studio collective.

Other WW artists who made such necklaces include Max Snischek.

There are several WW beaded necklaces in an edition of Collector’s Weekly.

Those who have access to Pinterest can find other examples of this noteworthy micro beadwork there.

The Wiener Werkstatte was founded in 1903 by the young architect Josef Hoffmann and his artist friend,

Koloman Moser. They catered to the elite and wealthy, and never produced large amounts of any design.

Other artists who designed for the Werkstatte include: Lotte Calm, Christa Ehrlich, Trude Hochmann,

Mela Köhler, Berthold Löffler, Fritzi Löw, Dagobert Peche, Reni Schaschl, Agnes (\"Kitty\") Speyer,

Amalie Szeps and Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill.
