Offered for sale here is a very rare and finely embroidered partial diadem for a Buddhist priests head piece. The colors are muted suggesting old vegetable dyes. Three Buddhas are portrayed each holding a treasure a lotus, an amulet and another item I cannot decipher. Each sits on a stylized lotus which is executed in the finest couching of fine gold thread. Actually one must use a loupe to really see it clearly. The rest of the figures are done in fine satin stitch floss silk embroidery. The details of the faces are still intact, and show a peaceful demeanor. The black silk which outlines the figures is somewhat degraded, this happens with age and the use of iron oxide to produce the dye. With age the iron interacts with the air and gradually weakens the silk. There are a few sprung gold threads which could be restored or simply removed. The reverse backing shows some staining and small holes probably from old insect damage. The style of the embroidery and dyes suggest an 18th century dating. Antique Chinese embroidery depicting Buddhist subjects is rare in the market. The complete diadem would most likely have had 5 panels overall. A good piece for lovers of old Chinese needlework and Buddhist art. This piece would be beautiful framed and with conservation and UV glass will last for many years to come.
