Authentic, antique, ancient Lunula Cross (Crescent Cross) pendant. Handmade, cast from bronze or similar brass-like copper alloy. Good antique condition, worn likely due to devotional wearing by several generations. Exact age unknown, could have been cast in the Medieval period or earlier. A cautious approach would date the cross pendant as an artifact from 9th - 10th centuries.
The style of the pendant is similar to the Celtic Lunula symbol. The Lunula, or crescent moon, is believed to be a remnant of pre-Christian, pagan worship of a goddess: the moon is an ancient pagan symbol of fertility and sacred womanhood. While most commonly Irish/Celtic, Lunula also appeared in Germany, Baltic countries and Northern Europe (Viking Lunula pendants). In the Ancient Roman Empire, girls wore Lunula pendants as amulets or talismans protecting them against evil spirits and sorcery.
This pendant has a unique combination of a Lunula overarching a Cross. In pre-Christian times, this combination could have symbolized a union of the Sun and the Moon. In the Christian era, the Cross has become a symbol of Christ, and the Moon or crescent has become a symbol of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary.
Similar findings are often described as \"Viking\" cross pendants or amulets. Such cross pendants travelled across Europe during the Viking Age, a period of Nordic military, mercantile and demographic expansion reaching the Byzantine Empire, France, Italy, Baltic nations and Ancient Russia (Rus).
