We are listing these rare circa 1780 Georgian decorated cast sterling silver sugar tongs by the world renowned female London silversmith Hester Bateman (arguably the most famous silversmith of all time). The tongs are marked inside one arm with a lion passant, and inside the other arm with the iconic cursive HB maker\'s mark. This mark was registered in 1778 by London silversmith Hester Bateman (see page 78 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). Hester Bateman was well known for her bow shaped tongs, but she made relatively few of these earlier cast tongs (the silversugartongs website only has two examples of them). The listed tongs are over 5 inches long, weigh 1.1 ounces, have an M*R monogram in a cartouche on the outside of their bow, are nicely decorated, and are in good repaired condition (almost all surviving cast tongs have been repaired, due to their fragile designs). These tongs have been repaired on each arm, and there is a slight repair on one corner of the bow as well. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the tongs have not been professionally polished). Even with the repairs, these are very rarely seen tongs by the famous Hester Bateman.
