Rare vintage Harvey Era Turquoise Hubbell Glass Navajo C.1930\'s bracelet :
$39.00

This is a rare Hubbell glass vintage Navajo bracelet c. 1930\'s - 40\'s. It measures 5 1/2 \" around plus a little over 1.1\" gap, so 6 6/8\" in circumference. The width is 3/4\" at the center graduating to 1/2\" at the terminals. On the front are three bright turquoise Czechoslavakian glass oval cabachons with black matrix. They look like Kingman turquoise. Each is set in a smooth silver bezel and secured on a split shank. Each cab is 1/2\" by 3/8\". The weight is 19 grams. The setting is streamlined and simple, bringing attention to the stones. The sides are notched top and bottom extending to the squared off straight terminals. There is a warm patina to the silver. I am not sure what the silver content is, as it is not marked at all. Could be sterling, coin, or nickel. The value is in the history and the stones, which is rich. John Lorenzo Hubbell was born in 1878 and started one of the oldest and still operating trading posts in Southwest America, located in Ganado, Arizona. He eventually built a vast enterprise of business and really developed Ganada, but the importance of his trading post there is that it provided a common and respectful hub of exchange between the anglos, Native Americans, and Spanish. He promoted the Navajo culture and heritage and is reportedly the only caucasian buried on the Navajo reservation. During the war quality turquoise was difficult to obtain so Hubbell provided the Navajo artisans with Czechoslavakian glass beads so they could continue their craft. He helped establish Arizona as the 48th state and is buried on Hubble Hill. This bracelet is a fine example of early, early trading post jewelry and history.
