THE ONLY SET OF BOOKENDS I\'VE EVER SEEN PAIRING FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT WITH ELEANOR. Both pieces are signed by artist A P Nardini. I have found little on him so far: a sculptor in the Boston area in the early part of the 20th C.
No maker\'s mark so I can\'t say who made these or when. But using on-line photos of the Roosevelts to compare, I am guessing these date to the 1930s. And the quality of the castings indicate the foundry was a skilled one.
The sale house lot description included this remark, \"Oral history of family: Gift from FDR to valet.\" I asked the sale house if they could provide more detail and their answer was that the comment came from the collector who put the set up for sale, it did not come from the family (whatever family that might have been). Solid bronze, a magnet does not stick.
Condition is fine, just some wear in spots where fingers have grasped these pieces for many decades. Finish isoriginal, has aged to a fine patina.
7 inches tall; 5¾ inches wide; 1¾ inches deep. And heavy: Eleanor weighs in at a lady-like 3¾ pounds; Frank, 4 pounds.
