RELIGIOUS WATER COLOR DESIGN FOR VICTORIAN STAINED GLASS WINDOW
by Heaton, Butler & Bayne

From the 1860\'s through the 1930\'s, the English firm of Heaton, Butler & Bayne was one of the foremost producers of Gothic style stained glass windows. This ink and watercolor drawing was created during the late 19th Century as a plan for one of those windows, and will be sold with .

#5768b  \"THE EPIPHANY; THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST; THE CRUCIFIXION; THE RESURRECTION\" (circa Butler & Bayne came into existence in London on March 26th 1862 when Pre-Raphaelite artist Robert Turnill Bayne joined the existing partnershipof glass painter Clement Heaton and lead glazier James Butler.

  • Using Heaton\'s innovations in stained glass coloring and permanency, the firm quickly became one of the key manufacturers of magnificent Victorian stained glass windows. Hundreds of Heaton, Butler & Bayne windows can be found in churches and cathedrals throughout Great Britain, the U.S,and many other parts of the world.

  • By the late 1930\'s, production of Gothic style windows was in decline and the firm finally closed its\' doors in 1953 after the death of Basil Richard Bayne, the last surviving partner. Many of the larger window designs as well as important documents were unfortunately destroyed due to a lack of storage space.

  • In 1975, Basil Baynes\' widow Simone Berthe Marthe Bayne sold what may have been one of the last major collections of the firm\'s window designs at
     Christie\'s in S.B.M. BAYNE, Her sale: Christie\'s London, July 1975 - Lots 224 through 255

    Size: - 22 1/2\"h x 10 1/4\"w,  Unframed

Medium: Ink and watercolor on paper mounted on backing Report:  Heaton, Butler & Bayne designs for stained glass are sold \"as is.\" These works of art were used as architectural studies for actual stained glass windows and were extensively handled over the years. Most have various accumulations of soot, foxing and staining due to poor storage conditions in the past.

This artwork is considerably soiled. There are a multitude of tears, \"cuts\" and fold marks in the paper. The elements of this watercolor were cut and pasted from other sheets to formthe final design. The artwork is numbered “5768b” and bares the stamp of the Gorham Manufacturing Company.

Gorham Manufacturing in New York (Broadway and 19th St.) served as the US distribution office for Heaton, Butler & Bayne from 1886 until 1906, at which time the firm established its\' own office at 437, and then 551 Fifth Avenue.

The numbers on these designs likely refer to an inventory which, according to the Christie\'s catalog, \"is lost.\" Therefore, no connection can be made between a drawing and any specific window or church. However, according to information gleaned from Mrs. Bayne\'s book \"A Hundred Years of the Art of Stained Glass,\" as well as various dates written on some of the works themselves, there is a general correlation between the numbers and an artworks\' date of time buyers receive a copy of the preface to the Christie\'s sale including a brief history of Heaton, Butler & Bayne.
