Reproduction - Model 1863 McClellan - US Army - Cavalry Saddle - Civil War :
$735.00

Here is the best of both worlds for the Civil War Cavalry re-enactor!

This is a custom made, almost new, US Cavalry saddle that will not only satisfy the authenticitydemands of themost discriminating Living Historian \"stitch counter,\"but willkeep his mount in a much better, more comfortable, and far soundercondition throughout any Civil War event, than some old reworked WWI relic could ever think of doing.

This saddle is built brand new, from scratch,to match amodified 3/4 Quarter Horse tree. What does that mean exactly? A close inspection of the photographs of the underneath of the saddle, at thecantle end, will show you if you look closely, that the bars of this saddle are spaceda bit wider and flatter than those of anoriginal McClellan saddle, whether it be a Civil War model, or alater variety from the Great War. This means that your weight will not be bearing down on your horse\'s kidneys like it would do if you were using an original tree.

Now there is absolutely nothing wrong with riding an old original tree if your horse is built like an old original horse. But modern horses are, for the most part, quite a bit wider through the loins than those old Army mounts were. Even at that, thehorses in the cavalry would easilysore up, and even gall, through the withers and back because of the poor fit of these old saddles. If saddled correctly, I promise you, that you will never have that kind of problem with this improved, wider, tree. Although a much better fit for your horse, it still works for you too, as the conformation of this saddle lies well within the variances of the differentcontractors that originally supplemented the sourcing of saddles to the Army.

This saddle was only riddenin one campaign. That wasat the US Cavalry School\'s 2010 re-enactment of the battle of the Little Big Horn. Every day for a solid week it crossed the Little Big horn at the Minneconjou Ford, and then was carefully put up in storage until now. For all intents and purposes, this is a new saddle. It is listed as used because of this one ride. You will be very pleased when youreceive it.

With the exception of being a little wider in the rear, this saddle is a standard 11 1/2 inch army seat. It will comfortably accommodate any man up to about 230 pounds. If you are larger than that, I would recommend a 12 inch seat. This saddle was custom built by David Scroggins of the Pony Soldier Mercantile in Yelm, Washington. For many years, he was the US Cavalry School\'s annual featuredlecturer on the saddles and tack that were used by theUS Cavalry at the Little Big Horn. He knows his tack, and he hand sews every stitch in the articles that he recreates. An example of his attention to detail are the riveted \"stops\"on each of the six coat straps. Inthirty years of riding military, I have never seen another reproduction saddle with these in place. These stops were riveted there, toprevent the soldier from losingany of the coat straps.Harness leather is used throughout, and in the weights that were specified by the military boards. This saddle is modeled after those that were made at the Allegheny Arsenal, and is so stamped on the end of the girth and on the near side fender sweat. The saddle is also \"Maker-Marked\" on the near side skirt as shown in the photos. The pommel shield is embellished withan entwined USA.This saddle is in perfect condition throughout, with the only exception being that one of the adjustment holes in the off girth billet is torn through to the hole immediately below it.Easily remedied.

The saddle stand is not included in this sale. It will be offered here on , along with all of the extra saddle accouterments, after the initial sale of the saddle is completed. Thank you for looking in. Happy offerding!
